Felting, spinning and weaving, are ancient arts practiced in Linda's studio to create handmade bags and accessories.
Felting has been practiced for centuries by many cultures. The sturdy fabric derived from manipulating wool has been used for everything from clothing to wall coverings, shoes, hats, and even armor for ancient warriors. The familiar sight of the American cowboy giving his beloved horse a drink from his hat, demonstrates the water resistance of well felted wool.
With this history in mind and using ancient techniques, Linda Mason Designs brings felting into the 21st century by making fashionable handmade bags and hats. Themes of nature and early cave art designs stir the ancient memories in our blood. Linda’s technique of “painting with wool” allows her to express important details in the images portrayed. This time consuming process produces pieces that are truly one of a kind bags and hats. Pieces that will bring you many years of use as well as compliments on your taste!
Linda Mason and her daughter, Morya, hand spin some of the yarn used for weaving the sturdy and eye-catching material featured in certain designs. Some of the weaving tells a short story in that the words are used to create the weaving pattern. This complicated coding process makes the woven fabric more meaningful. These completed handmade bags are unique and are made with natural materials, leather, antler, pewter, vintage, or handmade (by Linda) porcelain buttons. You couldn’t ask for more when it comes to being “handmade”!

Native Wisdom
The wisdom of the ancient Native Americans has long been present in our culture even if we do not realize it. Many people recognize this and feel akin to their beliefs. A high compliment was to be referred to as having a “good mind” or ga’ ni goe: yo: h. Pronounced (got knee goy oh), the Seneca words, ga’ ni goe: yo: h have been used to create the weaving pattern for this hand bag. A magnetic snap, tribal metal medallion, and hand made glass bead along with a long shoulder rope will hold all manner of paraphernalia. A Linda Mason Designs Original, the hand bag measures 8 x 8 inches and the cord is long enough to wear over the shoulder.

Good Mind Hand Bag
The wisdom of the ancient Native Americans has long been present in our culture. Many people recognize this and feel akin to their beliefs. A high compliment was to be referred to as having a “good mind” or ga’ ni goe: yo: h. Pronounced (got knee goy oh), these Seneca words, ga’ ni goe: yo: h, have been used to create the weaving pattern for this bag. In addition to the lovely weaving, this bag has a leopard, hand painted on a porcelain cabochon (check out the close up picture). Porcelain painting is an ancient art where powdered paint is ground with a medium of oil that must be fired in a kiln after each layer of application. Several firings are often required, establishing images that actually become one with the porcelain base. The cabochon is framed with a unique braid of leather, the flap is secured with a magnetic snap and a sturdy cotton cord is slung for the shoulder strap. This one-of-a-kind bag is made for travel and may the totem of the leopard lead your steps.
